Hello, I'm
Ali Amer
Smart Home · IT · Software
Smart homes, networks and software. I set them up, fix them, and build what's missing.
About
For four years I've worked at a smart-home retailer in Baghdad. I sell smart-home systems, design and install them for customers, handle around 450 customer and merchant conversations a month, and train new staff on the job.
On the technical side, I've repaired around 1,000 devices at component level and set up the network, CCTV, phones and access control at a branch and warehouse.
I've been programming since 2018 and running Linux as my daily driver for 6+ years. When the business needed tools that didn't exist, I built them: an e-commerce catalog and storefront, and a multi-branch repair-tracking system, both in real use today. That mix taught me to debug systematically and ship things that actually work.

Selected work
Smart home & lighting
Home Assistant automation and lighting design tools.

Showroom Automation: Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi 5
2026- ▹Automated a retail smart-home showroom: 11 Tuya light circuits, WLED strips, a curtain motor, a "window" light that follows the real sun, and AI person sensors that trigger a zone greeting
- ▹Fixed scenes that thrashed when pressed: measured device lag up to 4.4 s, then generated scripts that send one command per device every 350 ms, with a verify pass that resends only what didn't land
- ▹Built a three.js 3D twin with live Home Assistant state (tap a light to toggle it) and cut its cold load from 4.3 s to 1.3 s; the public demo runs it on a sample apartment

Hexlight: Hexagonal LED Lighting Planner
2026- ▹Planner for hexagonal LED bar lighting: draw a layout on a grid and get a live bill of materials, with bars counted by length, connectors detected from the joint angles (I, L, V, Y, T, X), and power inputs sized at 420 W each
- ▹Estimates floor-level lux with the lumen method and checks it against EN 12464-1 targets for the room's use
- ▹Arabic, right-to-left interface with an Arabic PDF export of the layout drawing; runs entirely in the browser
Built for the business
Software I built for the company I work for, all in real use.

Katalog: E-Commerce Catalog & Storefront Platform
Nov 2025 - Present- ▹Architected a 5-level price-resolution engine (per-customer → group → tier → retail) with request-time sale overrides
- ▹Built an automated PDF catalog pipeline on headless Chromium with an async worker queue that nightly pre-generates catalog variants, delivered through a Telegram Mini App
- ▹Integrated LLM APIs for auto-generated product summaries and Arabic→Kurdish (Sorani) translation
- ▹Engineered the full web storefront with cart, checkout, OAuth auth, loyalty points, Firebase push, and abandoned-cart triggers, with automated WhatsApp Business API order confirmations

Fixr: Multi-Branch Device Repair Tracking Platform
Oct 2025 - Present- ▹Built a multi-branch repair lifecycle engine (reception → repair → pickup) with 6-tier role-based access, atomic invoicing, and weighted-average-cost inventory
- ▹Engineered an offline-first PWA with service-worker caching and an IndexedDB queue, enabling QR scanning and form submission with zero connectivity, auto-syncing on reconnect
- ▹Automated WhatsApp status notifications via n8n with non-guessable UUID tracking tokens, plus AES-256-GCM encrypted backups and Arabic RTL PDF invoices

Asland: Bilingual Brand Landing Page
2026- ▹Rebuilt a 1959 Iraqi trading company's site from a Wayback Machine backup into a modern, statically-exported Next.js app
- ▹Full bilingual EN/AR with RTL support, scroll-snap slide layout, and IntersectionObserver reveal animations
- ▹Interactive multi-branch location map via Leaflet/OpenStreetMap; deployed on Vercel
Side projects
Personal projects, each with a live demo or public code.

Ops Panel: Phone-First Shipping Operations App
2026- ▹Built an Arabic-first, right-to-left panel that takes an order from review to packing to carrier handoff, with a stage-grouped order board and a one-handed tap-to-pack flow
- ▹Money tracking with operator wallets, driver ledgers, and a settlement screen that reconciles a carrier payout batch against invoices, order by order
- ▹Per-order chat threads, team rooms, and DMs with mentions and push notifications; a fixture-backed demo mode runs the whole panel with no backend

cvkit: CV Generator (CLI + Cross-Platform Desktop App)
2026- ▹Generates a CV from one JSON source as PDF, LaTeX, Markdown, or plain text, with parallel role-specific variant builds
- ▹Cross-platform desktop editor (Linux/macOS/Windows) and a CLI sharing one core; native PDF export with no LaTeX dependency
- ▹Automated multi-OS release pipeline (AppImage, .exe, .app) with CI and golden-output tests

learn-sql: Interactive SQL Learning App
2026- ▹Interactive SQL lessons backed by a real Postgres database running entirely in the browser via PGlite (WASM), with no backend
- ▹React + Vite single-page app deployed on Cloudflare Pages

Snip: Self-Hosted URL Shortener
- ▹URL shortener with click analytics, QR codes, tags, link expiry/limits, API keys, and admin panel; one-command TLS via Caddy

Hashban: Backendless Kanban Board
- ▹Single-page Kanban board whose entire state lives in the URL hash, with no backend; sharing the link shares the board
